What do you think about starting by removing them from lib/libpam/pam.d/? We could have freebsd-update emit a warning/error if we are going to remove the modules if they are still referenced - I can take a look at that, if you agree it's a decent idea.

I'm sorry, but... why? freebsd-version(1) was never intended for human consumption, it was intended for use by configure scripts, installers, etc. Adding -j was bad enough, I'm sorry I didn't catch it in time (I suppose it's too late to remove it). If you want the kind of information -v would give you, use uname instead.

I think you got it backward. I think it was always meant to be the frequency, hence the name of the constant, but whoever first implemented it got the math wrong and didn't realize, either because they had a tin ear or because they attributed the unpleasantness to the poor quality of PC speakers. And regardless, I agree that 1491 Hz is grating, and that alone is reason enough to change it if we want to.

While a man page for PAM in general would be useful, and I have previously said that this article would be a good starting point, a) it should be in section 7, not 8, b) the text needs significant work because man pages and articles are different mediums with different audiences, c) you still don't get to change the copyright statement. It says so right there in the license.
- If we're adding this, and I'm not sure we should, it should be in section 7, not section 8.
- Most of the article simply repeats, in different words, the contents of other man pages.
- You don't get to claim the copyright for my text.
