Summary

This man page is largely a transcription of the article by Dag-Erling Smørgrav, Pluggable Authentication Modules.
I did not include the programming examples, or items covered by pam.conf(5).

This is related to PR 63084.

  1. If we're adding this, and I'm not sure we should, it should be in section 7, not section 8.
  2. Most of the article simply repeats, in different words, the contents of other man pages.
  3. You don't get to claim the copyright for my text.

The underlying problem is there is no pam(8) man page (PR 630084).

I transcribed this man page based on your comment,
"Perhaps Someone[tm] would be inspired to turn it (or parts of it) into a pam(8) man page."

What do you suggest instead?

While a man page for PAM in general would be useful, and I have previously said that this article would be a good starting point, a) it should be in section 7, not 8, b) the text needs significant work because man pages and articles are different mediums with different audiences, c) you still don't get to change the copyright statement. It says so right there in the license.

Remove DES from copyright, assign to Networks Associates Technology, Inc.

After further review, the article by DES has no license.
I will create a patch to remove references to pam(8).

It is categorically untrue that my article did not have a license. Unfortunately, it appears to have been removed in the conversion to adoc. I will ask the responsible parties to restore it.
