@andrew This is an MFC of D47282 to stable/14; it needed minor tweaks because the handling of the 'type' parameter changed in HEAD, but it works (with a bunch of MFCs and this and D47253, gpio-aei is working on stable/14).

I figured there was no point both of us doing the same work to backport this. ;-)
