"The kernel's placing data" sounds... wrong. I can't quite put my finger on why. :-S

In any case, perhaps one of these alternate phrasings?

variables can be used to control how the kernel places data into

or

variables can be used to control the behavior of the kernel when placing data into

or

variables can be used to control the kernel's behavior when placing data into

Any of Ravi's 3 recommendations sounds much better to me as well

I like Ravi's first, but you can also drop "can be used to"

Yea, I stole the wording from one of the geom man pages.
