Would it be possible to go with LLVM_DEFAULT? Or is it too dependent on a certain version?

Unfortunately it's impossible, see https://gitlab.haskell.org/ghc/ghc/wikis/improved-llvm-backend for details

We can certainly delay removal if this is a significant loss. I didn't see this one since it's hard to see dependencies on platforms I don't run.

It's not a loss, the 8.6 branch works fine on arm.
