So far we have not implemented auto commit anywhere in our trees. Although I do it regularly in all of my servers to monitor changes in etc and LOCALBASE/etc but I don't think that is a good idea in our situation.

I have a vague hope of scripting something to compute all the numbers and present them to someone for plugging into the text, and of that script being committed as an annex to dev-model. That would avoid the autocommit can of worms
