Given https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=268994 we probably want to make sure zstd from ports gets pulled into gdb?

The backported patch (which is from gdb-13-branch and will be in 13.2) fixes the build if you are building the port on a system with devel/binutils installed.
