With my version of asciidoc, this produces a line in monospace, surrounded by literal backticks.

I suggest removing the backticks and having 2 spaces, not 1; that produces monospace.

If you want the "code block background", then the official guide is to have a line of 4 dashes (----) or dots (....) above and below the code.
