So 4.4BSD had two config programs: config and config.new.
I'd thought the 4.4BSD SMM referenced the latter, not the former, when I asked for this change. I was wrong.
In talking about config programs, config.new is often referred to as the 4.4 config and the other config as the 4.3 config.
Our config is based off config from the 4.4BSD tape, which is 4.3BSD Reno config with i386 support added.
Chris Torek has a paper on config.new that I'd read years ago, and I'd assumed that was in the 4.4BSD SMM, but my mistake was in not checking.
