Adding "variable" where it is obvious it is a variable (because of the markup) is redundant. Also, the full example is better, the porter won't have to guess what value to put in it.

NO_ARCH means the port is not specific to any architecture, right? So maybe "Ports that do not have any architecture-dependent files or requirements are identified by by setting"
