I went back and forth about it making it plural or not, but either way it needs some modification. Pick:

Kernels typically check...

or

The kernel typically checks...

Granted, now that I'm looking at it in more detail, I'm not certain "typically" is required. Does a kernel sometimes skip that check? If so, keep "typically"; if the check always happens, I recommend removing "typically".
