Summary

I've been hacking on this some more, how's this? I simplified the
language and found additional instructions in handbook/cutting-edge.

Is the intention to encompass upgrades from 14?

The change on this line is to simplify the text. What we have currently is too much, and it isn't even complete, right?

IIUC, *all* pkgbase upgrades to 15.0R from any previous version are unsupported.

The published edition seemed clearer, although it needs a minor correction, and can be rephrased in a different way.

Avoid this word in the context of pkg-add(8).

As explained in a previous review, and elsewhere:

  • an existing /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf should not be overwritten.
104–111

The ABI for PRERELEASE, ALPHA, and BETA was no different from the ABI for RELEASE.

Also, we can not assume AMD64.

This revision now requires changes to proceed.Jan 1 2026, 5:20 AM

The phrase system software is vague. It can mean the combination of base + the ports collection.

Will it also explain pkgbasify ? what is needed if after an fbsd-up from 14.x to 15.0, we want to convert to pkgbase ?

https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/cutting-edge/#_converting_a_host_to_use_freebsd_base includes a link to https://github.com/FreeBSDFoundation/pkgbasify.

The FreeBSD Handbook describes six main tasks. The inconsistency between the Handbook and the authoritative page was noted in a previous review, it can be corrected in a separate review.

I think my text still could use improvement, but to me almost all of these suggestions is going the wrong way towards "explain them to death".

Which word?

Not as far as I've planned. Each subsection only explains updating systems through their upgrade path. Maybe we should say something to that effect?

I have no idea.

… to me almost all of these suggestions is going the wrong way towards "explain them to death". …

More to the point:

  • did the suggestions help to end misunderstandings?

People who know my style of writing do know that in general, I prefer conciseness. https://people.freebsd.org/~grahamperrin/style/writing/tips/

did the suggestions help to end misunderstandings?

What misunderstandings?
Nobody has commented here to say they misunderstood these proposed changes. Or to say they helped, for that matter.

Please don't do this. Please don't let me do this if I start either.
