I'm just thinking why not to remove apei_devclass same time. Unless you wish this to be mergeable separately.

I have a followup commit to remove it. (My branch to start purging these has about 170 commits in it so far, but I'm only posting for review the changes to stop using the devclass variables. I plan to just push the changes to remove them directly)
