I understand you tested the build in the poudriere?

${INSTALL_DATA} ${WRKSRC}/${PORTNAME}.desktop \
                ${STAGEDIR}${PREFIX}/share/applications

Use ${DESKTOPDIR} instead of ${PREFIX}/share/applications.
