Is this from a PR? Has this changed in a recent FreeBSD version? If we have old versions supported that will still accept the old syntax, we need to mention that in the handbook. However, we are going to deprecate a few FreeBSD versions in January 2017, so we might not bother.

Yes, it's bug 214153. I asked the same question but realised that I ran into this issue recently (I have a 10.3 system which failed to setup a tunnel using the instructions in the handbook).
I can't recall with which release the instructions broke but going from the rc.conf(5), there's a cloned_interfaces_sticky which was introduced in 10.0 and it takes a boolean parameter.
I don't see any reference to cloned_interfaces_ in /etc/network.subr.

OK then. When that is the new way of doing things and the old one in the handbook does not work, then we should change it.
