Now that I've been looking at cran.mk more, I see that it already sets the default CRAN page as the default vallue for WWW, so you can omit this line.

I see you follow some of the version requirements from the DESCRIPTION file, but not others. (I also see upstream doesn't give version requirements for some dependencies, and there are other ports that ignore the upstream requirements.) I've always installed R packages from within R, so some of the subtleties might be lost on me. Could you clarify? Is there any reason not to follow all of upstream's version requirements?

In most cases, it's not that important because we only have versions much newer in the ports tree, but occasionally it is helpful. For example, you upgrade a port, test the build, and discover that one of its dependencies is outdated and needs updating.

You are right. It is definitely better to use the dependency versions of the CRAN description !!

leftover from a July patch I had submitted in Bugzilla. Will omit as discussed in https://reviews.freebsd.org/D59678

use minimum version of dependencies according to the CRAN DESCRIPTION, drop WWW
